Varanger in early summer

Varanger in early summer (May- June) is full of birdlife; lekking Ruffs, plentiful breeding and migrating arctic waders, thousands of breeding seabirds, attractive passerines such as Red-throated Pipits, Lapland Buntings and Bluethroats, Long-tailed Ducks breeding in small pools and Long-tailed Skuas on the tundra. For wildlife photographer this is the place to be at the early part of the summer! One can photograph throughout the night, since it will not get dark at all!

Here is 8-day option with breakfast. We will drive from Ivalo straight to Varanger.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Arrival at Ivalo airport. Your Finnature guide will be waiting at the airport. Drive straight to Varanger for photography.

Day 2

High altitude photography at tundra close to Båtsfjord. The tundra is the home of Long-tailed Ducks, Long-tailed Skua, Ptarmigan, Dotterel, Red-throated Diver and Gyr Falcon to mention just a few attractive species!

Day 3

Another day photography in tunda areas close Båtsfjord.

Day 4

Today we are going to visit the other town on the northern side of Varanger, Berlevåg. The rocky coastline is very photogenic and the cliffs along the road holds breeding White-tailed Eagles and Gyrfalcons.

Day 5

We will drive again over the fells and via the Teno delta to the Varanger Fjord itself. The coastline of Varanger has plentiful birdlife; including lekking Ruffs, breeding Bar-tailed Godwits, Turnstones and Red-throated Pipits. With good luck there might be White-billed Diver close to shore along the road.

Day 6

Today we have possibility to take excursion by boat to the large seabird colony on the Hornoya (weather permitting), home of thousands of northern birds. The Hornoya Nature Reserve is the easternmost of the protected bird colonies in Norway, home of about 25 000 pairs of Kittiwakes and 150 pairs of Shags. Northern Alcids breeds here: Brünnich´s Guillemots, Common Guillemots, Black Guillemots, Razorbills and several 1000 pairs of Puffins! A great opportunity to photograph birds.

Day 7

After breakfast we will start our drive back to Finland. We will make stops for photography along the road of Varanger fjord.

Accommodation: Neljän Tuulen Tupa Lodge in Kaamanen north of Inari.

Day 8

After some photography in the morning at Kaamanen, we start driving to Ivalo airport to catch the homeward flight.
